The new version of the Vienna Museum is now open
After three years of renovation and expansion, the Vienna Museum reopened at Karlsplatz in Vienna. It is a place that tells the city's history in an entirely new way, and at the same time is a modern meeting place for all culture-inspired people who live in or visit Vienna.
With a unique collection of top-class works of art and historical exhibits, the Vienna Museum offers an insight into the history of the Austrian capital in its main building on Karlsplatz. The city museum was built by Oswald Haerdtl in the 1950s. After three years of renovation and expansion, it reopened on December 6, 2023.
After the renovation, the museum gained a clear structure: on the first three floors, in the old Haerdtl building, there is a permanent exhibition “Vienna. My story” which in the form of a chronological tour tells the history of the city from the earliest times to the present. Entry to this exhibition is free.
“The word >>museum<< sounds like a place from the past. But our Vienna Museum is a place of the future. A meeting place, a place of participation, a place of knowledge exchange. The new Vienna Museum has created cultural infrastructure for future generations (…). Vienna is not only a metropolis with a million inhabitants, Vienna is also an approach to life. Affordable and with a high quality of life. Nothing currently reflects this better than the new Vienna Museum,” said Michael Ludwig, Mayor of Vienna, at the grand opening.
On the third floor there are three studios offering a wide range of workshops for all ages, event rooms and a large terrace with a spectacular view of the center of Vienna. The fourth new floor offers 1,100 m2 of space for changing special exhibitions. The first show will be dedicated to Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, and the opening will take place on February 1, 2024.
“The most beautiful thing is the invitation that this museum extends in so many ways now and to future generations through the participation of all residents of this city in its cultural riches,” emphasizes Veronica Kaup-Hasler, member of the city board for culture.
A few months before the opening, an audit regarding sustainability and environmental impact was carried out. The rigorous certification process was successfully completed and the Vienna Museum received the Austrian Ecolabel just in time for its opening as a museum and event venue.
The museum has standard opening hours: Tuesday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tickets can be booked at wienmuseum.at or on site.
